Were both wheels definitely hot ? If you have a $25 to $40 infrared standoff thermometer it is really quick to check all four wheels.
If both fronts were hot I'd be looking for bad ABS, sticking brake pedal, or other system issue - but if only one side I'd look for sticking caliper OR restricted brake hose. It could be the ABS, but without any ABS errors, that seems the least likely to me. Do check for sticking pedal or booster issues.
You want to rule out hose restrictions too. Brake hoses are at least 3-ply: inner lining, braided wire tube, and outer cover. They can get crimped and restrict flow. Sometimes this is by rusting fixtures on the knuckle, and you cannot see until they're cut open, so replacing hoses when you replace a caliper is the surest fix.
My 1999 SE has had BBA repair the ABS controller, but it has also had two new pairs of front calipers during that time. The last replacement was hastened by the irregular use it gets now.
Hope this helps frame your diagnosis.
