So it was the Water Pump.
The pulley sheet metal apparently fractured immediately adjacent to the weld for the hub, and the belt was captive enough that the pulley continued to whip around the shaft to which it was no longer connected. The belt is still nearly perfect. There is minimal damage to the timing chain cover ! I think my daughter is a genius for getting the car over and the engine off so quickly.
I have attached pictures in my album (see link)
I did the WP R&R at my daughter's duplex, which meant that I did not have my pressure tester to check the install before I reassembled the turbo pipes and the PS pump, etc - you know what that means: do-over. I pinched the side O-ring for the heater pipe into the pump, and I had to pull the cobra pipe off again to find my mistake. I got it fixed, applied 10 PSI pressure and let it sit for ten minutes with no leaking - then I put it back together AGAIN. I used Viton 219 O-rings on the pipe between pump and block, and I used only silicone grease to install. I will report back on longevity.
Now questions for the board members: The pump bearing was definitely not frozen when I removed it - the bearing was only a little notchy. The weld to the hub did not break and it's still on the shaft, it was the steel just next to the weld. So did the weld cause a stress fracture that slowly grew? Or did the bearing seize and then get broken free again by all the pounding from belt and loose pulley? Is this a common mode of WP failure ? Up to now, I have only had the pump seal or the O-rings go.
Thanks again to all of you for comments and suggestions.
