My approach to this type of dilemma is this. When my wife tells me I can't do something I reply ok and do it anyway. And second I point out that I could pay some person X dollars to fix it or do it myself and let her spend a percentage of X. This way her percentage gets spent on her hobby and I completed what ever task I had intended.
Now for you younger single guys (if there are anymore left), from my wife's perspective, the two options are 1)she didn't really care if I did it anyway and 2)she had already planned to spend X plus whatever savings I thought I might have made.
