In the USA, Switzerland and many other places
people buy sporty/luxury sedans that have high HP
gas engines... few would consider a high output
turbo diesel.

But in Europe, Germany, France, Belgium to name a few
you can hardly sell a car that runs on gas these days.
The reason is simple, fuel is expensive and diesel a lot
cheaper so that many people wana buy Diesel cars. Car
taxes are also a reason. In many places you pay for hp
or engine displacement.

The key realy is to have more different engines for the 9-5.

In the USA a stronger V6 would sell well... as would a stronger
2.3L HOT engine.

In Europe people wana get turbo diesel engines, SAAB will soon
deliver these using the new V6 3.0L turbo diesel they buy from
Isuzu.

The reason the 9-5 doesn't sell well in many plaves in Europe is
simply the fact that there are no diesel engines.

Problem with engines is that it is too expensive for SAAB to build
too many types... so they are forced to go out and buy some from
other companies.

Current 9-5 Engine Line Up:

2.0L LPT 150hp Europe 5spd or auto
2.0L HOT 192hp Europe only 5spd
2.3L LPT 185hp Europe and USA 5spd or auto
2.3L HOT 230hp Europe and USA 5spd or auto
3.0L LPT 200hp Europe and USA only auto
NEW 3.0L TD for Europe

What I see missing here are the following:
a) a 3.+L V6 lpt for the US market with around 250hp
b) a 2.+L turbo diesel for Europe with around 140-150hp

a) could be build by a GM partner company
b) could be purchased from FIAT as they have a 140hp diesel engine
which is actually quite good.

What's lacking is the will to do that and there are fears that
a new BAD engine could kill SAABs image again.

Regards,
Coolknight
