We have a '99 2.3 auto. We have _never_ had a pinging or detonation problem. Our ECU has been replaced, before the recall, and it needed it, but because of the check engine light coming on at random and arbitrary times. We run Texaco 91 octane premium pretty much all the time.
How are you noticing the pinging or detonation? Apologies up front, but, I am not convinced you are hearing what you think you are hearing. The ECU on modern cars is designed to prevent pinging and detonation, and they have knock sensors and ionization sensing to help them detect these sorts of things, and adapt to them, at a level that far exceeds my or your ear.
If you have some carbon deposits or some such thing that would cause pinging or detonation, things like Techron might help, but I am dubious.
I must say that the '99 4 speed auto favors very low rpms. Our Saab is my wife's daily driver, and she drives it in 2nd until she hits the freeway, and then shifts to 3rd. 4th is reserved for non-commute, long haul, gas mileage situations. If you have an automatic, maybe add a bottle of Techron, and drive around in 2nd for a couple of days.
Conversely, if you have a stick, perhaps you are favoring too high a gear. Let the car rev up a little. Shift at 4000 rpm for a couple of days and see how it does after that.
I realize I'm reaching here with assumptions. I have a soft spot for the '99 about to hit 50k owners, since that is what we are :-) Feel free to discuss this some more.
Best,
Bernard
