So does the car run OK ? My car runs fine with the PO420 code , and it has for the past 10 years . The Check Engine Light tells you that both O2 sensors are working , and they determine that your catalytic converter doesn't work , which is a fact about these motors and aftermarket cats.Check some of my old posts , I did manage to complete an emission test last year with a new cat and other things , but the code came back . Based on the fact that I have put on almost 200K miles and usually get about 27 mpg highway with a Thule box on my station wagon , there's no room for improvement . All of the engine input data is on the cold side / air fuel intake . There is no feedback from the 02 sensors telling the ECU anything other than the catalytic function . It doesn't send any limp home mode or anything . These engines are far from low emission . The original catalytic converters on these cars was huge , I remember getting top dollar at the salvage place years ago when I replaced it due to damage from previous owner { DIC failure } .
Plenty of Ghost rumors abound about a software upgrade , something about a TSB to change the ECU parameters ,but GM bailed on the 3.0 motor in 2003 . Good Luck !!
