The recent pumps leak and the o-rings flatten out after about a year or so . I sometimes dab some white petroleum jelly to hold the o-ring , but it is more important to go very slow and make sure the o-ring doesn't get pinched . Make sure the pump housing base is seated , then carefully tighten and torque the 3 bolts . The thermostats are the other weak link that seem to be more failure prone than in the past . Some folks suggest that the original thermostat had a jiggle valve which helped the coolant fill in behind the water pump after refill . I have been using the Gates brand pumps , or the Autozone , and the GM AC Delco . They are all from china . Look nice and cost about $35 or so . And they are what they are .
The old C900 models had a bleeder valve above the thermostat so the air in the block and head could escape . I might experiment and drill and tap a bleeder in my current v6 restoration just for kicks . Good Luck ! oh yeah , please take a close look at the timing belt rollers and tensioner ..they degrade with dire consequences , the first sign is grease slinging out of the bearing seals .
