Yeah don't bother taking the secure Torx screws out. I did that and ended up dropping the Torx bit into the engine. And it didn't even fix the leak. I just replaced the plug again last weekend and I punched it out after removing the valve cover. I also put the plug in a slightly different spot than where it was last time. That seems to have stopped the leak. I just used a long socket and a hammer to drive the new one in, then measured a few places from the head to the plug to make sure it was in straight.
As for the timing chain question, I'm not sure, but I'd like to know, so hopefully someone can chime in.
