I'd have to agree with posts here that the main culprit here is the horrible MX4V's that are standard issue on most 9-5's. (Not to mention the fact that they are useless in snow and not good at all in wet weather, and squeal very easily in cornering.) Why Saab uses these mediocre tires, I don't know. They really dull the handling and performance of a great vehicle.
We replaced the tires on the '99 900SE turbo convertible recently and I bought Yokohama AVS dB tires. They are WONDERFUL and I intend to replace the tires on my 9-5 with the same model tire. I'll post more here when I do that.
They are EXTREMELY quiet and this can easily be appreciated in a convertible vehicle. They handle great (much better than the OEM's on the convertible) and seem solid in wet weather. I've not tried them in snow, but that seems to be their only weak side from what I hear. Also they cost around $104 each from TireRack.com, etc. so they are less expensive than the Dunlop SP9000's. To my mind, they are an amazing value and great quiet, high performance, all weather tire. Try the Yokohama AVS dB tire, I think you'll like them very much.
