First, I do clean all of mine, fairly regularly.
I've got four 9-5s.
The original TB clearly failed on the '01 (the electronics) at about 100,000 miles and the replacement is doing great at 220,000 miles. Maybe voltage spikes from a bad battery cable;
The '06 wagon and the '04 Arc sedan still have their original TBs, at 212,000 miles and 234,000 miles;
And since I knew I probably would need new spares, I bought a couple of new TBs at a fair price. And I've installed one then the other on my '04 Aero sedan. In the hope it might correct an intermediate loss of power issue on that one. That car has 101,000 miles on it, can sometimes go a year with no issues. But we picked it up real cheap with 52,000 miles on it, with a dirty used throttle body already on it. So we knew we needed one new one, either way. But the replacement TB didn't resolve the issue.
I think replacement hinges on local fuel quality, and how much racing or severe congestion commuting a car is subjected to. I think the small engine cover, if you've got excessive heat going on under there, won't be enough to make the difference.
