I run 16" snow tires on my '01 Aero, no problems with brake clearance. It's like a different car with the 16's vs the 17's in summer. very calm and relaxed with the 225/55-16. Quite firm and sporty with the 245/45-17
I've got 225/55-16's on my '99 base model, and it too has a calm and relaxed ride.
FWIW I ran 225/50-17's on my dear departed silver aero, and the slightly larger sidewall of that tire made the ride much smoother and relaxed vs the original 225/45-17's. So I think that sidewall is a big contributor to the ride quality.
you might consider a 50 series tire on your current rims.
