The manual tranny shifter and linkage might be getting sloppy and pulling the shifter back and/or to side in the Park/Lock position relieves binding of the ignition cylinder theft lock feature. Surprising that the forced use of pliers didn't break off the key in the lock and real SOL trouble!! I furget, but cocked wheel position against a curb might also bring on similar binding of lock cylinder with same security feature. Better check condition of key that was twisted with pliers.
