I'm pretty sure you can still find some 3.5 full range speakers to fit in those openings, with minimal or no mods. Infinity used to make a few, including a 3032 CFX model on amazon, new egg , etc. I replaced mine a while back with some infinity kappa's a while back.. dont recall if it was this model or a predecessor (32.5 CF perhaps?).
The impedance of the stock dash speakers are rated very low, I think around 2.5 ohms, which could present volume matching issues. However, most replacements are rated at 4 ohms, but have a higher efficiency rating, which more or less offsets any concerns about volume mismatches.. So you should be ok on that front.
Do your research.. I recall forum entries in the past talked about replacing the door speakers, which are woofers, as you stated.. But most, at the time, thought the stock front door speakers were decent, and noticed little, if any improvement, when replacing.
I'm pretty certain Saab controls the crossover frequencies via its amp rather than a traditional crossover circuit on the speakers itself. So you can't simply install a 2 piece component system, as the output wires feeding the speakers at the dash and door do not contain a full frequency signal.
Hope this helps
Mike
