We are lucky to have TWO '01 9-5 base wagons, a happy circumstance. So far, these have been reliable, comfortable and safe (after hitting a deer in December I can defintely vouch for safety) cars for all kinds of transport. But, naturally, there are a few flies in the ointment -- not terrible, just something I would like to kick around with other Saab'ers.

. Our 'older' wagon now has about 28K on it -- in the recent past, I noticed a whirring sound coming from either the dashboard (odometer area) or the steering column. Think about the sound your watch makes when you wind it or a hand mixer at low speed. My husband never hears it. What could this be? We also hear a groaning noise when we start the car up, and that is definitely coming from the steering column or the transmission area -- sometimes it happens when we are driving. Finally, when we start up the car after letting it sit a while, we see some white smoke -- it goes away quickly. Is this normal? We are going to bring the car to a dealer to get them to check these items out. Any cause for concern?

In addition, I am trying to get a gauge on the car's value (we own this one outright), because we may opt to sell it. Except for a few scratches on the back bumper, it is in fine shape. Any ideas?

. Our other Saab wagon has about 13K on it, and it is leased. Since we may want to 'downsize' our life, and get a smaller car (like a Jetta wagon or something like that), is it possible to swap a Saab lease? Has anyone tried this? If so, what was your experience like? On the other hand, if we decided to buy the car outright (we are about 10 months into a 36 month lease), what kind of deal could we make on the car?

Thanks for your help and insights. They are much appreciated.
