I have two automatic 9-5s, but they both have the older 4 speeds. One is on its third transmission at 235,000 miles, and the other still has its original transmission at 180,000 miles. I went to look at another 2000 not long ago, and it was also on its third transmission. If you change the fluid regularly, they seem to be pretty reliable, but if you don't, they will fail. I've also heard that the 5-speeds have more issues with the shift solenoids than the earlier ones. They can be replaced, though. On the NG900, the manual transmission was actually the one with more issues. A 4th gear grind was pretty common on the older transmissions, but the automatics were pretty bulletproof, again, if they had regular fluid changes.
