The clip is indeed a wire c-clip and I’m glad we clarified it. Yes, I also found it unavailable so I reused my old OEM ones from the original OEM axle being rebuilt. And I have some new ones from a Chinese replacement axle and they look inferior to me so I used my old OEM ones. The CV joint puller that I used and recommended pulls the joint right off as you slowly tighten the axle nut on the end of the puller. With every turn of the nut (I used an impact wrench in short bursts) the puller gradually pulls the outer CV joint out and off the axle and in doing so, compresses the hidden clip as the race of the CV joint slides over the c-clip as it comes off the axle. And before using the pulley I removed as much grease from the CV joint as possible so I could see what was going on while pulling the joint off and, of course, to make the job far less messy. I recommend lots of heavy duty paper towels, rags, etc., to clean out th grease. I also used a great non-toxic, non-petroleum based degreaser — Formula 88 — available at Lowe’s or Home Depot. Degrease the joint as much as possible with rags and towels, then tip the axle on end, pour Formula 88 in the CV joint cup 4-5 times swirling it around and letting it sit for a few minutes and then tip the axle cup upside down and Formula 88 mixed with grease comes gushing out. You can degrease the whole CV joint before you take it off, or afterwards. I did it on both old CV joints (cleaned them up and thoroughly degreased them) so I could inspect them, take them apart and see the wear patterns on the inner and outer races, the splines, and the ball bearings. I was curious. I found they do indeed wear down — I was quite surprised actually to see the wear, particularly on the splines of an otherwise “good”, non-leaking CV joint with 183K miles on it. Based on the wear I saw on mine they must have caused a bit of slop in steering and turning.

Lastly, l’ll try and post some pics of my home made tool I fabricated to pull the entire half axle out of the transmission side on the drivers side, and out of the intermediate axle on the passengers side (US car).
