9-5 Aero: Weird clutch failure

2001 9-5 Aero sedan, 5-speed manual, about 180K on the odo. Pulled into crowded parking lot, felt clutch pedal getting a bit "soft." Went to pull out about 45 minutes later, zero pedal pressure, pedal goes to floor, shifting about impossible. Called for a tow to the local Saab whisperer's shop - our tech for many years.
As they were very busy, the car just sat there for about a week. They called us this morning to say that the owner (also the most experienced tech) had been driving the Aero on and off for a few days, clutch pedal pressure completely normal, shifting just fine. I asked them for an explanation - and they had none!
Anyone here ever experienced something like this?
(As a crazy aside, many years ago I was in NYC with my 9000T 5-speed, and the clutch pedal went to the floor in bumper-to-bumper traffic on a major highway. Against all expectations, I was able to get the car moving in third gear with a lot of gas pedal, drove 400 miles home at highway speeds in 5th gear - at night. Clutch required major service, as I recall...)
