Sunroof/Moonroof rattles - repair advice

The sunroof rattles when the car strains in gear. Pushing up on the sunroof window stops the rattle.
My initial look at the roof finds that the wind deflector does not go up when the window is retracted. I think this is the issue and not the sunroof window rattling.
The wind deflector will go up if I lift it, and the deflector hinges in the front seem fairly sloppy/loose. It almost seems that the front hinges have fatigued and don't popup the wind deflector. There is noticeable lateral (side to side) movement of the deflector. The hinges towards the back on each side of the opening seem in tact. I lubed everything I could see that looks like it moves but no joy, the deflector still sticks down.
I searched the forums for similar issues and people diagnosed the clips on the deflector arms on each side as the issue. Those seem OK on my car.
Any suggestions on possible issues?
How does one remove the wind deflector? - do I have to drop the head liner?
Looking here, it seems a lot of the parts are NLA - sigh. Other sources?

Thanks for your help
