My Take on it... Posted by MisplacedYankee [Email] (#1756) [Profile/Gallery] (more from MisplacedYankee) on Sun, 25 Aug 2002 22:37:24 In Reply to: Why Aren't Saabs more popular?, Catherine, Sun, 25 Aug 2002 17:16:09 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
In the 80s and more so in the 90s Saabs were looked at as less than a value - more a high priced snob sedan - especially the 9000. I remember working at a Country Club in Connecticut in the late 80s and early 90s and it seemed like every member drove a jag or a Saab. My impression back then was that Saabs weren't really known as a great car to get the bang for your buck. they were actually more of a distinguished car. In that day they also had a reputation for being unreliable -- especially during a time that the Japanese automakers were making their mark as the ultra-reliable choice. Its true that Saabs MAY have been in the shop more ten years ago, but they never die. Given this many people scratched Saab off their list and went for the Japanese cars - great technology and super reliability for a decent price. The loyal Saab fans stayed with Saab.
I really think everything is beginning to change. Saab hasn't really changed its price point after all these years and is now building a car that has better reliability and great performance. The Japanese cars are now way to expensive for what you get. Sure they are reliable, but boy are they blah in the style department. Saabs have always had a certain attractiveness to them and now that they are designing a bit more for the populous while still keeping some uniqueness I think they will become more popular. I really believe the Saab slogan that if people will just test drive one they will buy one. I used to travel a lot and only owned a few cars that I didn't care about. I was regularly renting a 9-3 and when I went on vacation with my wife to Colorado we rented a 9-3 SE Conv. After that my wife stated "This is way better than the BMW". We had a 96 BMW 328is at the time. Well since then we have had two Saabs...
At any rate I did want my first car to be a Saab SPG (I got my license in 87 and my Dad, a loyal VW/Audi follower, said NO -- You don't need a Saab story) and I had to wait 13 years before I bought my first Saab;) Now I am hooked. It will never matter how much money I have to buy other cars, I will always have a Saab in the garage.
