Just read an article in a French car magazine.
They testes the new Renault Laguna 2 V6. During the
test the ESP malfuntioned while they backed up the car,
the failure caused an immediate accident, the car got
damaged. The testers were pretty surprised and upset about
this.
I don't think that ESP is ready for wide spread application
in cars... if you look around a bit you will find out that
planes that use electronics to remain stable always use
tripple systems as it is possible for a single unit to
react in a wrong way. So until moden ESP systems in cars
rely on 3 computers, this whole ESP thing will probably
produce quite a few accidents.
Just immagine, you drive on the freeway at 70Mph, road is
dry and temp. way above freezing point, then ESP kicks in
for some reason believing that action to stabilize the car
is needed... even so the car is driving straight ahead...
in an instant you lose control as ESP is working against
you... before you know what is going on your car goes off
into a spin... and now anything can happen. Friend of mine
died cause of this, his 2 other passengers who were not hurt
told me about the "ESP" light being on a minute before the
whole thing started. (Car was an AUDI sedan)
So until we got tripple ESP systems money should be spend
on a good suspension/handling setup not on ESP.
Legistalators should react quickly and REQUIRE 3X ESP computers
before the ESP goes completely out of control resulting in
more deaths.
Regards,
Coolknight
