At least one of the digits of a "regular" credit card number is a check digit. If you ever miss a _single_ digit when entering a number, I guarantee it won't go through. You have to change at least two digits to "accidentally" get a wrong account - assuming by a stroke of luck that the check digit would calculate the same. Transposing numbers won't work as the formulas take into account the digit's position in the account number.
I am very suspicious about what happend to Linda. It is very unlikely that a "close" number would have processed.
Many years ago, I worked in the IT department of a bank. Check digits were used for all accounts - not just credit cards.
