I see the "I put snow tires on my rwd/fwd car and now it goes anywhere my friend's 4wd goes" arguments all the time (even in BMW bulletin boards). I'm not sure that I believe this. I have a 2wd/4wd truck with all season tires that are fairly worn and not great tires. In 2wd, the truck goes nowhere in snow. When I put the truck into 4wd, it goes everywhere in the snow. Because of the crappy tires, stopping and turning can be fun, but traction up snowy hills -- even from a stop -- is no problem. (Heck, even on icy roads, 4wd helps get going; doesn't do anything for stopping, but it does help you get going.)
The TT has a "haldex" awd system, which many Audi purists believe is no where near as good as the "torsen" system found in most other Audi's (and VW's). From what I understand, the haldex system is basically fwd that transfers power to the rear wheels when the front wheels slip. (By the time the front wheels slip, mayber you're already stuck?)
I do believe that snow tires really help traction in the snow, but I'd take 4wd with crappy tires over a fwd with snow tires (and fwd over rwd). Of course, put aggressive truck tires or snow tires on the 4wd, and this would rock.
