Hi AeroLady,
I'm not siding with my friend Jason, but I would like to state that
life is not black and white.
The behavior which needs to be controlled is not speeding. The
behavior we need to control is reckless driving. I would much rather
see everyone driving 90mph, always using their turn signals,
checking traffic before changing lanes and not tail-gating.
Speed limits are blunt instruments, and if they are meant to control
reckless driving, they don't work. Also, don't forget about the time
when national speed limit was reduced to 55mph not to control either
speeding or reckless driving but to reduce fuel consumption.
Fallible people write laws, and sometimes laws are written for
the dumbest reasons unrelated to public welfare. For instance,
in some of the back-water states there were laws against teaching
evolution. There are still some state legislators who want to mandate
that creationism be taught alongside evolution in the classroom. These
are people with their own religious agenda who want to impose their
beliefs on other people with fundamentally flawed laws.
Our founding fathers understood the fallibility of human beings and
had the prescience to say that they themselves could be wrong. So,
the absolute best provision in the constitution is the clause which
allows amendments to itself. Our most cherished rights do not come
from constitution proper. Freedom of religion, freedom of speech and
freedom to assemble peaceably all come from the amendments to the
constitution.
Fallible people write laws sometimes for flawed reasons. Other times,
they may write laws with the best intentions but with unintended
consequences. Just look at what happened with the prohibition. That
one well-meaning law single-handedly allowed the rise of organized
crime in this country.
Some laws are just plain B.S, and life composed of shades of gray and not
black and white :-)
We're not picking on you, AeroLady, Queen of 9-5 BB! :-)
It's just fun to debate, especially an important topic like this.
thanks
Jae
