We had a rattle from the instrument cluster on our '99 9-5. At first it only rattled when we were in snow. I think it must have been due to a resonance from the frozen snow bumps created by the treads from the snow clearing equipment, and the cold. When it rattled, it really rattled. However, it never rattled in town here at sea level, and the dealer was reluctant to fix it without beaing able to hear the rattle.
Eventually, we had a cold snap, and we were in a position to demonstrate the rattle for the dealer as the rattle could now be produced more locally. It would have involved a 45 minute drive to the road that produced the rattle, and back, and it had to be during the cold snap.
Time is money for them too, so the possibility of tying up a service writer for a period of time while one heads out to the proper road convinced them to take us at our word without a demonstration.
Our dash was fixed, and we have had no more rattle.
Bottom line: invite your service writer out for a 45 minute ride to hear the rattle.
Best,
Bernard Littau
