the weirdest noise after turning off car...

2002 Linear wagon. After turning off the car after this morning's commute (20 minutes on a cool 35-40 degree morning), I spent the usual few seconds putting away sunglasses etc and then hit the rear door unlock button. That worked fine, but at the same time, a very strange grinding/rumbling noise came from somewhere in front of me (under the dash or under the hood I couldn't tell). Kept going for some time until I decided to turn the car back on - at which point the noise disappeared. Then when I turned it off again, the noise came back. The sound is like you might hear from either a low-frequency discharge (something like 50 Hz) or a old motor grinding.
I decided to look under the hood, but by the time I looked under the hood the noise had stopped. Any ideas ?
