What is happening is that the wheels have reached their mechanical stops, and you are asking the pump and rack for even more travel. Since the wheels won't turn any farther, the pressure in the system builds up higher than normal in the system and you noice that effect.
As others have said, it is normal in _some_ power steering equipped cars. I think it depends on how the steering stops are set - if the rack reaches its stop before the wheels do, I don't think the noise occurs. I have a Suburban that made lots of noise in a hard turn. I had the alignment guy adjust the wheel stops slightly and the sound was much reduced.
Anyway, just back off slightly on the steering wheel when it happens and ignore it. Or, have the dealer check it out at your next scheduled service.
