NINES is working on a story from a well reputed Saab service provider that questions the use of 5W and 0W oils. This provider reports more bearing wear and damage with these oils, as compared to their preferred 15W50 Mobil 1, or a mixture of 15W50 and 5W30 in the winter.
A wide-range oil like 0W40 or 5W50 contains more viscosity modifiers, tiny little balled-up organic chains that loosen up as they get warm. At higher shear rates (that means, inside the bearings) the viscosity (and that means oil film thickness inside the bearings) drops toward the base-stock viscosity (that's the oil without the viscosity modifier). Unless global warming takes a holiday, most of us may be better served using one of the 10W40 synthetics.
Synthetic oils have an inherently better viscosity index than natural petroleum oil, so at normal engine temperatures, Mobil 1's base stock may measure out as an SAE 10 or thicker, while a full synthetic 10W40 base stock, at normal engine temperatures, may measure out as an SAE 20 or 30.
You can see some viscosity curves at red line oil's web site, http://www.redlineoil.com.
