Nobody is arguing about whether or not you will see the SID milage rise when coasting down hill with the car out of gear. What we are saying is that it would rise faster if it were still in gear. This is because the engine is getting fuel when you are coasting and not getting any when it is still in gear. This is an electronic fuel injection thing. What you are saying is absolutely correct about cars with carburators, they do get better coasting down hills with the transmission out of gear.
Now as to legality and safety of coasting down hill out of gear, well it is illegal most everywhere and not near as safe as leaving it in gear, so go ahead and continue to coast down hills.
