A few answers:
- Type of technology used in DI is unique to Saab and consists of sensistive electronic circuitry. Given that complexity and the heat of engine compartment, there are multiple failure points within the DI. And many of the failures will give no advance warning, as they are likely due to the expiration of a solid state component.
- Whether this failure is "common" is kinda of a matter of draw your own conclusions , as we have no statistical data comparing the failure rate of the Saab DI to other modern auto ignition systems. IMO the type of technology used in the Saab DI along with numerous failure postings on this board raises some very legitimate reliability concerns. As you may have concluded, I'm a victim of DI failure, and was extremely agitated by the occurence, as well as disappointed with Saab over this.
- If you want to delve more deeply into the design particulars of the DI, do a web search on "capacitive discharge ignition systems", and you should be able to find additional info, including representative schematics.
Happy Holidays,
DR. DI
