Zeke, I had not, thanks. Read through it quickly, and found it very informative and interesting. Looks many of the references at the end of the paper are Swedes and probably employed by Mecel. I would not hesitate to say that Saab has the best engine management available on the production market, and Swedes rightly have long been recognized for their engineering expertise and innovations.
One item did kinda puzzle me in the paper, that which said that the primary circuit(low voltage) of the ignition coil is used in the ion detection measurement, I would not have thought that, and the drawing would seen to indicate otherwise.
The paper address spark advance and the ion detection concept for combustion control. Not a subject of the paper is whether the high voltage ignition spark is produced by a simple inductive coil, or by the more complex comination of power supply/charge capacitor/ignition coil. I'd conclude that the capacitive discharge system used in the current Saab DI could be replaced by a simple (and many times more reliable) inductive system, like the one in the new 9-3 sport. I also predict that the CD system will be eventually phased out in the interest of both cost and reliability.
thanks again,
dtech
