We have a 1999 SE V-6 and a 2000 A4 (Front track, not quatro) with the 1.8 engine. Since we have both, I believe I can give you a comparative perspective on both.
The Saab: Very comfortable seats, very comfortable on trips, smooth, effortless and comfortable cruising at 80 to 90 mph. Gas mileage about 30 at 75 mph (with AC on)(on premium) Gas mileage around town varies depending on traffic. (About 18 for us) In comparing build construction the Saab wins hands down. In an accident, I would definately want to be in the Saab, no contest (in spite of what NHTSA tests may indicate. I think they rate the SAAB and the Audi the same) Headlights on SAAB are very good.) If you want good headlights on the Audi you need to get the Xenon lights, which are excellent) Harmon Kardon radio is very good, and the speakers are good) (Need to upgrade radio that comes with Audi to get comparable performance) In cold weather, SAAB warms up very fast, providing plenty of quick heat (heated seats are great also). In warm weather (in Florida) AC could be better in my opinion, it works but again, could be better) Performance wise, the V-6 has plenty of power at all speeds without torque steer....and excellent traction under all conditions. Tires (Michelin) are doing very well at 30,000 miles and should go to 45,000 or so. On the highway the SAAB tracks very straight and does not seem to be influenced by cross winds. SAAB has roomy back seat, Audi is smaller and has less leg room in back.
Audi. The 1.8 engine (5 speed) with APR chip is a hoot to drive. Very powerful perfomance....but guess what....when you up the HP on the Audi, you get torque steer! Must be careful when slippery. Perhaps not a problem with Quattro???? But with Quattro you get added complexity and lose about 2 mpg as well as reduced power (of course you get more power to the road though) At speeds above 85 the car sounds busy. Some wind and engine noise starts at these speeds and above, SAAB is quieter) The A4 with the 1.8 and automatic is somewhat sluggish....try before you buy to make sure it is not bothersome. Audi seats are good and hold you in place well during sprited cornering. Seats not as comfortable as SAAB though) Gas mileage is about 32 on highway at 75 (with AC on)also on premium. Sport suspension on Audi is excellent. Good combination of firm and compliant. Fun to throw into a curve.
If I had to pick between the two, I would lean toward the SAAB. The SAAB has a winning personality, and I know I will own another. Perhaps that is why most SAAB people name their cars?
You will have to set your own priorities as to what features and characteristics are important to you....then what vehicles, and at what price you find in the market place. Two very different vehicles. Good luck in your purchase.
