Tire Update and Upsizing Question

Thanks to all who posted over Christmas to help me find replacements for the stock Michellin's on my '01 SE. I got several responses, and after an ill fated attempt at Continentals, and pouring over the posts on this board, I decided on Pirelli P7000 SuperSports. Saved big $$$ over michelin. So far, they are wonderful. Very grippy and not loud. The car rides much "sportier" now. I'll let you know how they go. The TireRack folks seem to like them too.
My question is this. To get into this tire, I upsized to 225 50 16's, instead of the stock size for this car of 215 55 16's. One of the folks on the board suggested upsizing, so i thought I'd give it a shot. The tire guy said they don't normally do this upsizing unless asked. Have I done anyting that will adversely affect the handling or performance of the car at all? It looks great! A friend of mine mentioned I might have a problem if I had a failure in one of the tires since I upsized. Is there any truth to this?
Thanks
