Good to see posts that offer some understanding for people who have been frustrated/dissappointed in the reliability/maintenance aspects of their car, instead of the typical flames, like how dare you expect a Saab shouldn't cost you extra money to maintain. Well I don't have that expectation at all.
But the above is not the reason for the post. Didn't most every maker of passenger cars phase out grease fittings 20 yrs ago ? (with the exception of 4 wheel drive trains.) I think the primary reason for dropping grease fittings was both to reduce component cost, and also to reduce weight.
And whenever my autos gets up there in miles/yrs(150/10) I do the old grasp and twist or grap wheel and rotate to determine if the particular joint has dried up. If dry, you can pull back the rubber seal and insert a needle point grease injector, and pump away. Can also regrease most sealed bearings such as wheel bearings. However remain open to any ideas to extend the life of CV boots, that one has got me completely stumped. Although I expect the replacement CV boots on my 9-5 to last at least to 100kk miles, as opposed to the factory ones which simply began splitting their joining seam at 12k.
Let's see if the folks who say they expect to spend a lot of maintenance $$$ comment on this. I have plenty of other things to spend my $$$ on.
dtech or maybe cheaptech ?
