My 01 9-5 used to have the smelly problem. Many people suggest that changing the brand of the gas. Though I appreciate the suggestion, it absolutely makes no difference. The first time I brought my SAAB to the dealer complaining the problem I was told it was normal. But the smell keeps getting worse that my wife had refused to drive it. Casual passengers of mine also notice this abnormal smell so I don't think it is just me being over-sensitive.
The second time I brought it to the dealer they told me the turbo is going bad and sucking oil from the engine. The turbo was then replaced and the smell is gone, completely. Not a tiny bit of smell no matter what gas I feed it. It is an over $1,500 job that paid for by SAAB, under warrantee.
I understand your frustration so I want to share my experience with you. This is probably the only problem I had with my 9-5. Once it is fixed I quickly forget about the frustration and again started to enjoy every ride with it. I also have a Acura CL-S parking side by side with 9-5. 9-5 has a completely different drive feel and is worth every single penny. Hang in there and good luck!
