from patting myself on the back. Me, novice mechanic, just finished my first brake job on my 9-5 wagon. First ever brake job on any car, as a matter of fact.
Took about 3 hrs, replaced pads and rotors. Did the right side first, my biggest problem was getting the 18mm bolts that hold the caliper to the hub off. Cheater bar took care of those. I also had trouble compressing the piston enough to allow getting the caliper off. Inexperience I guess. Once I got the caliper off replacing the rotor was a breeze. The dreaded rotor index bolt was no problem, in fact on the left side it came out with hardly any pressure. (I imagine my '99 9-3 will be different). Once I had the whole caliper off I had trouble getting the inboard pad back in, so I re-grouped and put the caliper back on, and went from there just like I was only changing pads. The left side went smoother and faster, but again I just re-attached the caliper after doing the rotor as I had trouble again with the pads. Perhaps the next job will go smoother.

The condition of the old pads...the right inboard pad was totally shot, I mean maybe 1mm of pad left, so I'm glad I did this today even tho the weather is crappy. Oh, and I discovered when I compressed the piston on the left side that when I had my 30k service, the dealer had topped off the brake fluid! Argh! So, even though I followed Deans instructions *completely* and pumped the brake pedal between sides, when I compressed the piston on the left brake fluid dripped down like crazy @#$&#^@%#%^@&!!!!. Thanks a lot guys. Now my brake fluid is above full, and I don't know how to get the extra out without contaminating the fluid. I was thinking about getting a brand new turkey baster and using that to withdraw some fluid. Any thoughts on how to get that out? Next, put tools away and went for the test drive. No noise!!!! In fact they are damn silent. Whooo hooo! When I got back from the test drive my wife asked "well?" and I said..."I rule!" and said "give your master mechanic a kiss" Now I'm drinking a Yuengling, feeling good except my lower back isnt very happy.

If anyone wants to do this job, go to the NG900 board and search for "drs_install". For pads only Dean has a "drs_install" on this board, too. Dean, your instructions are fantastic thanks a bunch. Time for another Yuengling. I was going to change the tranny fluid too, but that and the brake dust cleanup will have to wait till tomorrow. P.S. This is a *very* dirty job. Man. I'm very happy though. It was a great day!
