High or Low Octane.Does price justify the performance? Posted by Shaun [Email] (#683) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Shaun) on Sat, 1 Mar 2003 09:36:57 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Greetings one and all... I gather from the BB that only 91 octane petrol is available in some parts of the States and pardon my ignorance but this comes as a bit of a shock/surprise for me here in Singapore.
Have a 2001 9-5 with a stock ECU upgrade to 185Bhp, 280Nm and the dealer recommended premium 98 octane petrol for "better performance" and to "prolong the life of the engine". On the local website http://www.saab.com.sg, they advocate 98 octane petrol or at least 95 octane for use in places with a "high ambient temperature". Well it averages about 32 Deg C here with the average humidity being over 90% and I was just wondering if im blowing extra cash on performance fuels that i dont need.
Are there any differences in fuel consumption or engine reponse/handling/power/performance if a higher octane petrol is used and what are the advantages/disadvantages other than a slightly deflated wallet?
Thanks for the invaluable feedback.. you have no idea how comforting it is to hear from people who's cars are so much more to them than another depreciating asset thats a potential accident waiting to happen.
Cheers
