Service Observation and 9-3 comments

Hi all. I've posted here only once or twice before. Took the '02 Aero in for a 15K oil change yesterday. Dealer recomends this here in sunny Arizona - and I agree - as it gets plenty hot much of the year, and often dusty too. As a matter of fact, I asked to have the engine air filter replaced rather than wait until the 30K service. We live on a dirt drive, and the car eats dust every day. I've changed the air filters at 15K intervals on my other cars for years, but most of the time I can do it myself. Anyway, the upshot is that as it was apparent I wouldn't be able to get at it because of its location, I had the dealer do it. When I picked her up, I was told the filter was in good shape and I had wasted my money (over $50 w/labor). I was further told that the filter is a high capacity affair that would stretch quite a ways if spread out like an accordion. I've concluded Saab has over-engineered this part and would advise others not to replace their air filters any more often than recommended. Maybe this will be of value to someone out there.
Another subject - I was given a new 9-3 Linear to drive for the day. As opposed to what I've seen here, I didn't care for it. The motor and auto tranny were responsive and smooth, the best parts about it, IMO. In the negative column, the dash seems cheap and plasticky, the steering wasn't linear (no pun intended; I'm comparing to the 9-5), and I almost felt claustraphobic in it (I'm 6'3"). Don't get me wrong, I've owned a 3-series and an Audi A4, so I know a car in this class can feel more spacious. And the current A4 has a far classier interior. I couldn't wait to get back into the 9-5. Maybe the Arc and Vector models will make a better impression. Can't complain about it as a loaner though.
