Odd wiper blade problem

Yesterday afternoon while driving on the interstate in pouring rain the passenger side wiper began making a strange slapping sound. The blade cleared the rain fine, though, and since I was close to home and wasn't about to pull off and investigate in a torrential downpour, I didn't search for the problem until in the garage. It seems one of the two parallel metal inserts in the blade had extended itself about five inches out the end of the blade, and had managed to gouge out the laser red paint between the hood and body on the car's right side for about an inch, as well as scrape up the lower right corner of the black metal windshield surround. This is an original equipment blade. Has this happened to others, and, since my 30k is coming up, can the paint be repaired under warranty? I'm assuming just pushing the metal insert back into the blade is enough of a fix, but I can't imagine how it suddenly became extended. I washed the car two days before and both blades were fine. Thanks in advance.
