This is a fascinating discusiion and very edifying indeed. Don't forget we nanually shifting SAABers are enthusiasts. We love the feel of driving and strive to enhance the feel all the time. F1 cars and drivers, by far the most elite of all, still utilize the basic principles of Physics and the closer the driver is in contact with the forces created in high performance driving, the faster and smoother he/she can be. Though the F1 shifts are automatically actuated the transmissions are still gears, shafts and bearings. The only fluid involved is that which actuates the clutch and the shifting mechanism. Torque converters make for an entirely different drivetrain feel. The seat of the pants is sill the ultimate teacher and in the end and the driving is the thing. Simpy put, it just depends on what you like!
