Oil change interval

I have always followed the "3000 mile" rule for oil changes with good results; I've kept 2 cars (Volvos) past the 200K mile mark that way. One of those is still going strong; the other would be but for an unfortunate parking lot encounter with a tractor-trailer rig. I plan to keep my 9-5 for a long time and a lot of miles. My partner, who freely admits he's "not a car person", says anything more than the factory-recommended interval is a waste of money. I claim the more frequent changes are cheap insurance. I checked earlier posts and found a good recommendation, supporting a 10K interval if using synthetic oil. (EricG, January 4, 2001). But apparently this is after the "break-in" period, using fossil oil. My car has only 6000 miles now. Based on this, should I (1) stick with my usual or (2) change every 3K until 10K miles, then switch to synthetic and a 10K interval? Or split the difference and use synthetic but change every 5K or so? What do the rest of you do? Thanks for your help!
