Plus sizing wheels on a 99 9-5

I just purchased a used 9-5 ('99 SE). It has the original 215-55/16 tires.
I am going to be replacing the tires, and I was thinking of moving up to 17" tires and wheels. I would like some improvement in handling, but I don't want to compromise the ride too much (I live in bumpy New England). What has been peoples experience with plus-sizing 9-5 tires? What is the trade off between ride and handling? And how much more susceptible to tire damge will the 17" wheels be?
