what you are feeling is the lowest part of the steering column,the lower shaft slides on the upper shaft,after a while it needs to be greased so the column slides freely,yours is starting to bind slightly and when it does slide it now "pops".this is totaly normal movement of the steering column,it just needs to be removed and greased,pretty simple procedure
