The Hunter 9700 "balancing machine" has optional side-force measuring capablity (as well as rim out-of-round and tire uniformity masuring capablity). Even better, the 9700 is a "GM Dealer Tool" - many Saab dealers have them, all of the *should* have them (IMO). I would recommend anyone buying tires to seek out a vendor that is so equipped. I'd rather mail-order tires and take them to my local dealer (Dave Towell Cadillac Saab in Akron, OH) than to buy tires locally at a store that isn't so equipped.
During the "research" for the story, I took a set of tires and rims to the Hunter Training School in Hudson, Ohio, where the instructors demonstrated the machine. Four times :-). I HAVE NEVER, EVER IN MY LIFE, except as Original Equipement on a new or nearly new car, gotten a set of tires that were perfectly smooth and straight running the first time out until then.
