Short Belt option- is it legit?

I've read lots of helpful info and DIY instructions on replacing the serpentine belt on the 2.2l 4cyl with a shortened belt which bypasses the sometimes troublesome and hard to reach center idler pulley. Judging by the postings, it seems to work well for those who have attempted it.
I'm troubled, however, by the silence of Saab on this fix. Although one March '03 posting referred to an impending Saab technical service bulletin advocating short belt procedure, I have been unable to locate its existence. Logic tells me that if the center pulley is unnecessary, and causes additional reliability problems to boot, it would be dropped as OEM in a New York minute. Why would a mfr add parts amd increase complexity w/ no corresponding utility or benefit?
As I look at belt replacement in a few months, I'd appreciate any insight on this issue
