'99 9-5 auto transmission problem: advice needed

OK, at about 90,000 miles my transmission has developed a problem. Dealer says it must be replaced to the tune of $3000. I politely decline the offer, hope that the car will run long enough for me to figure out what to do with it.
The problem is that, especially when idling, or under throttle at low speeds (reverse seems especially prone), the tranny keeps dropping all the way into gear momentarily, causing the car to lurch slightly in the direction of movement and the engine to nearly stall. Usually, while idling at least, I can get around this by putting the car into neutral until I'm ready to start moving again. Occasionally (much less often than the idle problem), the car shudders a bit at highway speeds.
My questions are simple: does anyone think a problem like this is likely to be reparable via less drastic means than replacing the transmission? And, who would be a good candidate to check it out and perform this work? Saab specialist? Transmission specialist? I guess I can just take it to Aamco or something, but I'd love to have a specific recommendation for a trustworthy transmission mechanic.
I'm in the Morris County/New Jersey area. All suggestions appreciated. I'll probably ditch the car rather than replace the transmission, but I'd much rather come up with a manageably-priced repair.
Thanks in advance!
