Hi Bill,
The DI cassette is the direct ignition module that sits atop the sparkplugs. It replaces the coil and ignition wires of a standard automotive setup. There has been a significant number of DI failures in LPT4 9^5s reported here at TSN, enough that asking for a new one might not be a bad point of negotiation with your dealer (and you can keep the old one as a spare in your trunk). For whatever reason, the V6 doesn't seem to have collected a history of DI failures, even though it's got two that might fail.
If it fails, you car either runs horribly or simply stops.
BTW, the DI is not new to Saab, they've been using them for more than ten years, so at least it's proven technology. There must be a heat or vibration problem with the LPT4 that's causing them to fail.
Hope this helps,
Rick
