When the clunk started on my 9-5 I thought it was the control arm bushings so I replaced them with the power flex poly bushings. Needless to say that was not the problem. I love the solid feel that the poly bushings provide and the car tracks much better especially in the snow but I had to keep looking and looking and probing and prying, well you get the picture. I had the strut braces that hold the engine from underneath replaced and that seemed to help. Next I firmed up the motor mount underneath the horse shoe brace by squeezing a whole tube of GE RTV into it. Next I put a hose clamp around the lower rear motor mount to firm it up and Voila! That did it. Honest. I think the motor rocks back a bit too much and makes contact with the rack. It's tight down there. Try this. Open the hood put the car in gear and hold the brake. Now start to pull out while holding the car still see how much the engine moves. You may be surprised. Maybe you could steer the dealer tech in that direction. Good luck!
