Steve,
I don't think the V6 was discontinued for any of the reasons you listed. If there were common, frequent problems with that motor, you'd be reading about them all over the place on this board. Those who predicted doom and gloom with this motor [because of Saab's previous V6 offering] were quite wrong.
Know that the V6 uses a timing belt, which gets replaced every 60K miles. The first one is changed for free. I can't say about differences in parts cost, because our car is under warranty until 50,000 miles and we haven't gotten there yet. Obviously, the four cylinder is easier to work on, because of size and layout.
Some people here were complaining about belt tensioners failing at out-of-warranty mileage, with either motor. The infamous DI cassette problems seem to be more frequent on the 4 cylinder. I think the V6 is being discontinued because Saab has more room to safely offer higher power ratings [larger turbos, etc.] with their 2.3 liter.
I don't think you have anything to worry about. Just make sure your dealer's service department is good. This was such an issue for us that we won't get another Saab after this lease is done. Good luck with your purchase.
