SAE 30 kinematic viscosity is defined as 9.3 to 12.5 cSt at 100°C.
Mobil 1 formulates xW-30 oils at the low end of 30 weight range, while Amsoil formulates their xW-30 oils at the high end of the 30 weight range.
Many of the so-called 5W-20 oils are actually in the low 30 weight range.
Mobil 1 SS xW-30 oils are usually around 10.0 cSt at 100°C when new, sometimes thicken a little with use. M1 TriSyn was less than 10.0 cSt.
Amsoil's 5W-30 and 10W-30 are usually around 12 cSt when new, and often thicken to nearly 13 cSt with use.
Mobil 1 0W-40 starts out at around 14.4 cSt and thins a bit with use, to around 13.3 cSt. So with use, you can see the M1 0W-40 and the Amsoil xW-30s wind up being very close in kinematic viscosity.
More importantly, there's a big difference in the high temp/high shear viscosity, M1 xW-30 is around 3.0, while Amsoil xW-30 is > 3.5, and M1 0W-40 is 3.6.
Mobil's Delvac 1 5W-40 is 4.1, I'm trying this at the next oil change!
SAAB recommends ACEA A3 oils, which means HT/HS should be 3.6 or higher.
