I have an '02 Linear with 5 speed manual. My wife has an '03 Linear with paddle shift auto. My opinion is, if you want a stick, get a stick and don't fool around with shiftable automatics. Just put the auto in drive and let it do its work (which it is very good at).
To answer your question, though, put the shifter at "M" (for "manual", I guess), and use the paddles on the steering wheel to shift up or down. The "+" paddle on the right is for upshifts, and the "-" paddle is for downshifts. The dash display will tell you what gear you're in.
I have used the paddles a few times and find them awkward. I suppose if you use them routinely, you can get used to this method of shifting, but when you've been using a shift lever to shift with for decades, it's kind of hard to adapt. All in all, I think the paddles are a gimmick.
